Minoxidil Patient Education Guide

  • Minoxidil is a topical medication that acts directly on the scalp to support hair follicle activity. It does not affect systemic hormones.

  • Minoxidil is used to improve scalp hair density and thickness by supporting follicles that are inactive but not permanently damaged.

  • Minoxidil:

    • Increases blood flow to scalp follicles

    • Extends the active (anagen) growth phase

    • Encourages follicles to produce thicker hair strands

  • Hair follicles cycle between growth and rest. Some follicles stop producing hair without being permanently lost.

    Minoxidil may support individuals who:

    • Experience diffuse thinning

    • Notice reduced hair density

    • Prefer a non-hormonal option

  • Can:

    • Promote gradual hair regrowth

    • Support follicle activity with consistent use

    Cannot:

    • Work immediately

    • Prevent hair loss after discontinuation

  • Mild scalp irritation may occur. Consistency is essential for results.

  • Temporary shedding may occur early as follicles transition back into growth.
